Patrick Kelly: A Designer to Know

As I was driving home and the radio host was giving a Black History fact and it featured the late designer Patrick Kelly. I did not know who the designer was prior to listening to the radio spot.

I found his life story inspiring and it makes me want to keep pressing forward on my fashion journey!

I put together two different bios for the designer:

PatrickKelly was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi, USA. He attended JacksonState University where he studied art history.
Heworked with a tailor in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, before moving to NewYork in 1976 to study at Parsons School of Design.

n1979, he went to Paris and began his career in the fashion businessby designing and selling cut-out cotton tube dresses, on thepavements of the city. He soon has a large following for hiswhimsical clothes. He also did a stint at a Rive Gauche boutique anddesigned for Benetton. Kelly also became a costume designer for LePalais nightclub.
Huge buttons, abbreviated hemlines and atalent for tromp l'oeil, marked him as a natural New Yorker in Paris.His colourful clothes were a product of his Mississippi childhood andhis long-held fascination with antique clothes.

Heso impressed his French compatriots that he became the first Americandesigner to be elected to the Chambre Syndicale de la CoutureParisienne.
Patrick was very unusual in many ways. He wascertainly one of the first openly gay black fashion designers.Kelly's promising career was cut short by an early death on 1stJanuary, 1990. He died in Paris, of bone marrow disease, a braintumour and complications from AIDS.

On28th March, 1990, the Fashion Institute of Technology, in New Yorkheld a memorial to Patrick Kelly. They filled the windows of their7th Avenue showrooms with his creations. All his friends in thefashion industry, and the models who had worked with him, and theclientele who had worn his clothes, gathered together to remember himwith great sadness.
The first retrospective of the designwork of Patrick Kelly is being held at the Brooklyn Museum of Artfrom April to September 2004. It is in celebration of the opening ofthe BMA's new front entrance pavilion and public plaza, a $ 63million dollar project of the City of Brooklyn and supporters of themuseum. -via Fashionmodeldirectory

January 1, 1990 Patrick Kelly, fashion designer, died.

Kelly was born September 24, 1954 in Vicksburg, Mississippi. He initially studied at the Parsons School of Design, but in 1979 moved to Paris, France. In 1985, he created Patrick Kelly Paris and began making outfits for Benetton and upscale Paris boutiques. In 1987, Kelly signed a $5 million contract to create a line of clothing for Warnaco which gave him international recognition.

In 1986, Time Magazine described his clothing as “fitted, funny and a little goofy” and in 1988 the Washington Post said “Patrick Kelly has a witty way with fashion.” Kelly was proud of his upbringing as an African American in Mississippi and it was reflected in his work. His clientele included Betty Davis, Grace Jones, and Jessye Norman. In 1988, Kelly became the first American voted in as a member of the Chambre Syndicale, an elite organization of designers based in Paris. In September, 2004, his work was the subject of an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. - Via TodayinAfricanAmericanHistory

2012: Year of the Fashion Stylist

Year: 2012

Goal: Start Styling Clients and building a fashion styling portfolio.

This is the year that I want to officially start building my fashion styling portfolio. This means producing and styling photo shoots and working on building a clientele in my area so in a year I can make the move to NYC with a fashionable portfolio.

I'm beginning to work on the details on how this all will happen to start building a clientele and just finding ways to contribute to my styling portfolio. It's one thing to give advice on what a friend should wear to actually styling them.

I want to be at a place within six months that I can begin to get clothes on loan from the local boutique and have clients seeking me out to style them for different occasions. This then can turn into a way for me to constantly styling and working on building a great fashion styling portfolio.

Until then I will be visiting a lot of thrift stores and raiding my friends closet in order to style them and extend this into getting clients. I also need to start working on establishing my fashion styling wardrobe. It's time to make room in my closet!

Fashion Spotlight Video: Red TOPMAN Denim

I ordered a pair of red jeans from TOPMAN last month and they made their debut over the weekend. I paired them with a blue shirt from the thrift store and my gray shoes. To accessorize I wore my watch and earrings.

There are many ways to pull off red pants and I plan to show you all how in upcoming post.

Guy: What made me select this picture were the jeans. Denim jeans with distressing and holes always catch my eye and the dramatic hole on his right leg made me want a pair just like that. Besides the jeans the v-neck cotton 3/4 cut sleeve shirt was a perfect way to balance the look. The fit on both are done perfectly and the shirt was able to show off his body art in a fashionable way as well.

I came close to finding one, but the denim was to light. If I do find a denim jacket with the right color I will purchase it (if it's a reasonable price) and cut the sleeves like I always intended.

My two best friends and I decided to take pictures like we always do. The original intention of the picture was to capture our looks before leaving the house. When I uploaded the picture today and added an iPhoto vintage effect it became a whole lot more.

I was wearing a thrift store blazer, a simple red shirt and blue jeans. The look was classic, but worked great with the records hanging in the background.

Rihanna Rocks an Indie Style in We Found Love

Rihanna released her latest video We Found Love off of her upcoming album. She and her onscreen man, Dudley O'Shaughnessy(Model & Boxer) take us on a journey of being in love and falling out of love.

The song is great and is very popular in the clubs and the video is dramatic and reminds me of an Indie Film(think Requiem for a Dream). I enjoyed both the song and the video concept, but my favorite part are all of the wardrobe changes made by the two.

I believe the video was shot across Europe and the wardrobe inspiration is European street fashion. I'm trying to bring that exact style into my own wardrobe everyday. It's a very thrown together look and says I don't care, but reads I do care.

This is good news to me because I'm a major fan of Target and believe that Wu is an amazing designer. Pictures for the collection have not been released, but the collection will debut sometime next year for the stores spring fashions.

I've been a fan since her modeling days, then her talk show, still ANTM, and now publishing. She is doing a lot, but is very focused on redefining the definition of beauty and fashion for young girls and women.

The cardigan is vintage and was worn to keep me warm for a cool night. The jeans are my favorite part. They are European skinny jeans and I love them. I'm a huge fan of Kimora Lee Simmons and she is once again making a mark on the fashion industry. Several years ago she moved on from a certain clothing line to focus on her other ventures and let the world into her life with her Style Network show Life in the Fab Lane.

This year she became the Style Networks Fashion Editor and it was just announced this month that she has become the President and Creative Director for Just Fabulous.

JustFab.com is a online fashion store that is known for their shoes, but offers more. Kimora hopes to turn it into a lifestyle brand. What's special about the company is the monthly subscription service. Customers pay $40 a month to receive a new pair of shoes that are hand picked to match their style.

It is a cool concept and I'm happy to see Kimora taking over. This company has no choice but to rise.

My TOPMAN Necklace

I took a trip to Chicago last week and on the top of my list of places to visit was TOPSHOP/TOPMAN on Michigan Ave. In all I spent about six hours on this street and the surrounding area... FUN!

One of the items I purchased was a black chain necklace with a gold anchor. This my first necklace and I was afraid that I would not like it, but I wore it for the first time today and love it. No buyers remorse here.

Guy: I chose this look because of the jean vest. I have been searching for a denim vest for so long, but have yet to find one. Well, I did find one but it was out of my budget so I have to wait to purchase it. In the meantime I searching for a jean jacket from the thrift store so I can cut the sleeves off and transform it into a Jean jacket. From the looks of it, his vest was made that way and not done at home. He is a fashion muse!

ZARA's United States E-Commerce Store Opens

I have been waiting for this day for so long. ZARA is a brand that I have fallen in love with over the years by picture only because there is not a Zara in my city. I sometimes meet people who are wearing some of their pieces and I just stare.

That all ends today. ZARA has officially launched their USA E-Commerce store. This is the first outside of Europe and they offer Mens, Women's and kids clothes. I'm so happy by this news. I'm going to cut this blog short and go shopping right now!

Two websites worth bookmarking are VOGUEPEDIA and MYFDB.

The first is the brain child of Vogue Magazine and is an electronic encyclopedia of all of the fashionable people and beauty featured in the magazine.

The second site is the creation of actress Zoe Saldana. This helps you track all of your favorite fashionable thinkers and their accomplishments and projects.

I will be exploring this websites a lot more. The results seem to be endless and its always fun to study fashion from the past, present and future.

You can't have school without having books. So why not make some of those books fashion books. These four books are full of fashion information and pictures and are worth adding to your fashion library.

The first book off the list I have not read, but I recently read so many great reviews that I've added it to my Wish List. This book is written by a fashion stylist for all inspiring fashion stylist (like me!).

Secrets of Stylist by: Sasha Charnin Morrison

I devoured this book when I read it and took pages worth of notes. For anyone wanting a career in fashion please read this book. It gives not only great advice, but tools and real stories from the experts and interns alike.

The Teen Vogue Handbook

The next book is an amazing blog and an amazing book full of street pictures. I was so obsessed with the fashion inside this book I photographed the pages with a camera and have them archived.

Guy: Wearing double denim for some is considered a crime, but I think it is possible to pull-off. Not everyone will and should wear double denim. When wearing double denim it's all about color and amount. In the picture above the denim on top is lighter and I think that is a great rule to follow. Have the top denim be a lighter wash and not as flashy, but the bottom must be darker and can have a unique aspect. He is wearing blue from head to toe but in a fashionable way.

Today is the first day of the semester for me and a lot of students across the country are returning to school as well. To celebrate another school year, this week I'm going to be sharing fashionable back to school items.

When going back to school this semester I brainstormed the top four items I want to add to my tech wardrobe. I tested these items in stores, but am still in the process of purchase. All four items are not only stylish and desirable, but will really make your school year more enjoyable and possibly easier.

1. iPad 2 - starting at $499

I encourage you all to go into an Apple store and try them out for yourself. I plan to purchase one in the near future or talk someone into buying it for me as a gift. These are great for on the go computer access and are easily stored and light to carry. Plus they have amazing colorful cases you can switch out to coordinate with your days outfit.

2. Flip video camera- starting at $79.99

I had a chance to use one for a day last school year and I fell in love. They are having an amazing sale on the items and I am seriously considering purchasing one this week. They are great for the quick video and are easy to upload to your computer. Like the iPad 2 they come in different colors and designs to help you stay fashionable.

3. Amazon Kindle- starting at $114

This is a great e-reader that is light and have different color options and the ability to purchase books on the go. It can also save student money when buying book because eBooks are usually cheaper than the hard copy.

4. Cannon PowerShot- $159

This is great for capturing different moments of the school year and sharing with friends on social media sites. Plus they have tons of colors and are small enough to travel easily.

You have been quoted in an interview saying you aren’t really into fashion, but I don’t believe that. Do you honestly not like fashion, at all?

London:

I have tons of taste and I just got an eye for shit. I will walk into a store and come out with the best five shirts there. In high school, I always dressed to impress the girls. Brooklyn, where I grew up, is a competitive burg—there’s always a pretty boy around the corner there and you gotta look better than him. I love to shop; I’m just not like a fashion guru, though. I didn’t grow up drawing runway models and deciding what they should wear. Also, I couldn’t dress someone else up. Wait, actually, this year I just started [dressing] the band.

You also have a shoe coming out with Cole Haan soon. How closely involved with that are you?

London:

Actually, I have been on the phone with them like nine times today. The shoe has three different blues—it’s a perfect shoe to wear while you make out with someone in a library. But I am going to make a couple shoes at the end of the month with someone else—I can’t share details though.

Healthy Lips

Being fashionable isn't just about what you are wearing, it's about the whole package. For me that package includes my lips. I use to be a constant ChapStick wearer, but I have graduated from that. Now, I exclusively use Aquaphor. It works wonders for my lips. Plus they have other products you can use to heal and keep your skin healthy.

Before I leave the house each day I put it over my lips, sometimes I over due it on purpose. When I get to my destination I press the back of my hand against my lips to get rid of any excess gel and I'm ready to go. Aquaphor doesn't leave my lips looking shiny, but healthy without worries of having chapped lips.

Every person, guy or gal, should keep their lips healthy. The product is up to you, but I choose Aquaphor.

White Summer Shoe

I have a pair of white shoes that I have only wore in the summer. They style perfectly with almost all of my shorts and are great to wear without socks [If concerned about sweaty shoes, put baby powder inside of shoe before wearing them without socks].

If you don't already have a classic white pair I recommend going out today and finding the perfect pair for you. Even if you don't wear them until next summer there is a good chance you can buy them on sale now. If you can't find a pair now or want to wait to buy, start looking at the beginning of spring.

When I first purchased mine I was nervous about them getting dirty really quickly, which happens. I cleaned mine with house cleaning supplies. I grabbed a bottle of Soft Scrub, dish soap, clean sponge and cleaning gloves. I scrubbed the dirt away and they looked brand new.

A good thing about wearing these shoes only during the summer months are the compliments. Most people forget that I even own them and they think they are new are quick to throw a compliment my way.

Fun Photo Shoot

I mentioned yesterday that I went out and had a mini photo shoot at a few locations around the city. It was in the evening so the sun was beginning to set and that made the bonus photo look even better.

In the past I wore button up shirts and accessorized with hats, watches and earrings. So today I decided to keep it very minimal and focus on pairing three different colors. Plus, I wanted to create a few looks that had the potential to be male model photos.

We starting kind of late so we were only able to shoot at a few locations before the sun begin to disappear, but we still were able to capture plenty of great shots.

Tear Sheet Fun

All fashionable thinkers take pride in going through monthly or even weekly magazines and taking tear sheets for inspirations. I'm no different in taking pages out of magazines.

If you don't already collect tear sheets, I strongly urge you to begin. It's very easy, simply go through a magazine and when you find a picture or any graphic inspiring rip it out and put it in a safe place.

Here is what I look for and why I collect tear sheets:

References - When I want or need to style a look or need inspiration for a photo shoot I go to my collection and see what I like and may try to imitate or may take the concept and recreate it my way.

History -It's a great way to go back and look at trends from the past and even to catalog what your favorite designers have created and what their different ads look like from season to season.

Enjoyment - Sometimes going through a magazine and looking at creative fashion and ads are simply fun. A lot of the times I get behind on reading magazines so I try to set time aside to go through some of my magazine and find the best tear sheets.

Collecting tear sheets is really fun and should be habit for every fashionable thinker.

Ebony Magazine: Men's Fall Style

I was flipping through the pages of Ebony Magazine September Issue to read Zoe Saldana feature article and I came across a few pages of men's fashion that caught my eye.

Normally I would tear the pages out and archive them, but I was reading my Mom's mag and she probably would not have liked that. Instead I photographed them.

The first page was a mood board type of spread titled 'Paperboy Chic'. I've always been fascinated with this style and come fall I may be screaming, "Hot off the Press!"

Lately, I have become obsessed with professional dancers style. You know the dancers you see when you are watching a behind the scenes video to your favorite pop star music video.

They are a rare breed when it comes to style. Dancers are able to put any look together, go to rehearsal or an audition and make it look cool. A lot of off the shoulders and layers, but it just always looks right.

Around The World In Fashion: Ethiopia

Our first fashion trip around the world took us to India. Now we have landed in Ethiopia.

People of Ethiopia do a great job in mixing colors and wearing statement headpieces. Even when they are hard at work they are fashionable. Take a look below:

The three photos above highlight the eccentric headpieces that seem to be common in this country. I know I could never pull off any of these trends, but they sure do make it look easy. The top photo reminds me of a piece of art. Fashion is art and they truly have done an amazing job in showing the world this.

I have also noticed that they over accessorize, but in a very tasteful way. If I would try and wear bold necklaces or earrings I would be reported to the fashion police, but these photos show that this is their normal way of dressing and it comes effortless to them.

The two above photos show people hard at work, but once again we all should take notice to their wardrobes. The top photo shows two men wearing over-sized neutral colored wardrobes, but it once again shows off the fashion of the country. But, the man to the right stole the show and I want to steal that red shirt!

The second photo looks to be layered on top with a patterned skirt below. The pop of blue truly makes the whole look standout in the crowd.

The final two photos are amazing. The women walking the street in their colored layered outfits with minimal jewelry. The second photo shows how to wear traditional clothing and if I might add all white correctly!

Take note, fashion in Ethiopia is not to be overlooked!

Guy: Besides his hair, his slight harem pant catches your eye. I love how he paired his harem pant with a simple gray tank and multi-toned boots. He is not afraid of accessorizing, which he did perfectly. He's wearing rings, bracelets, a necklace and earrings all tribal inspired. I say he is a Monday Muse!

Beauty in Nature

Color and inspiration is very important when styling, but sometimes FT's have to take a step outside of fashion and look at the world around them. That's exactly what I did yesterday at the park.

At the park I found art, butterflies, moths, and of course plants. All offer inspiring patterns, shapes and natural colors that I'll remember when I go to style a wardrobe.

The beauty of nature always has a way of inflicting emotions that can be used as a natural mood board for life and inspiration. Look at what I found inspirational in the park:

Classic G-Shock Watch

My all black [Casio] G-Shock watch can always be seen on my left wrist. It was given to me as a gift a year and half ago and I've been wearing it everyday since. I may never take it off because I get complements on it all the time. But, lately I have been asking myself if it's time to add a new watch into my wardrobe rotation?

In the past I've had the classic metal chain watch with a medium size face. The face of my watch can't be to large, my wrist can only hold so much. Now, I'm on the hunt for a classic metal watch possibly with a vintage look to add to my wardrobe. Over the coming weeks I'm going to scout out department stores, malls, thrift stores for the perfect fit. I will keep you all posted.

In the meantime, I am going to keep wrapping my black watch around my wrist. I have a trending feeling that my G-Shock watch is on the verge of becoming a classic.

I came across this shoe yesterday and immediately fell in love. I don't wear High Tops, but the painted look is definitely appealing. Plus, the description said they are as comfortable as a skater shoe and I'm guessing skateboard shoes are comfy. To really make me want this shoe is the price; Vans are selling these for $55.

Now I may have to consider buying a High Top Sneaker.

A couple of days ago I went to a magazine release party in my honor. The party was downtown in an area called The Short North and it has a very hipster vibe (my current obsession).

The weather was nice and the neighborhood has so many photo worthy locations, that it was only fitting that I along with my best friend Allizon have a downtown photo shoot.

Of course people were staring, but that made it more fun! I had so much fun that having another guerrilla style photo shoot in the future is a must.

Recently I have seen a lot of commercials for JustFab, which got me to thinking of ShoeDazzle (you know the company owned by Kim Kardashian). Are both of these sites the same and if so which is better?

ShoeDazzle: I've known about this since the beginning of Keeping Up With The Kardashians (I think), for about $39 a month a stylist picks a pair of shoes just for you and they will be mailed directly to your house each month, they have recently added handbags and accessories.

JustFabulous: [As I'm watching this the commercial comes on again.] Has the same concept as ShoeDazzle, a stylist picks a pair of shoes for you each month and they are mailed to your house each month for the exact same price as ShoeDazzle.

ShoeDazzle may have the advantage - Kardashian backing and a new $40 million investment.

Tyra Banks is a business mogul that has approached the fashion industry from a beauty perspective. Several months ago Tyra launched her website typeF.com. This site is a fashion and beauty hub for women who want to look their best.

typeF connects to users Facebook profiles and upon joining the site users answer a series of questions that then personalizes the site for them. I of course have not joined the website, but from watching Tyra in interviews I have learned that the site then feeds users with fashion and beauty tips that is personally tailored for them.

After going through my iPhoto archives, I saw a pattern in my Celebrity folder. A lot of celebrities are wearing all black. With this I decided to take five photos and share them.

Lenny Kravitz- Most guys could not pull this look off, but he certainly did what he could only do. I take my hat off to him. Be it his draped shirt, sling bag, leather pants, and my favorite from his look; knee-high wedge black boots. He wins as the best dressed Celeb in black. (I see a post coming about his style)
Kim & Kanye- What is there to say about this stylish duo. This was taken at Dash New York and it surely did not disappoint. Do they ever let us fashion lovers down with their personal style choices?
Ricky Martin- His look may be simple, black tee and black coat, but he has a spark about him that turns a simple outfit into a style statement. (Fingers crossed that his 'Musica + Alma + Sexo Tour' comes to a city near me)
Cory and Tia- A couple in love and a baby on the way, makes for a glowing ensemble for Mr. & Mrs. Hardrict. He went for the classic; vest and tie, she spiced it up; lace dress. Who said you can't be sexy while pregnant?
Gaga, Beyonce & Usher- Hat, sparkle, coat. This trio really brought the fashion. Gaga as always went daring, Beyonce sultry and sexy, Usher comfortably chic.
